Do I Need A Pumping Bra?

If you are planning to pump breast milk more than once a day, the answer is yes. Hands free pumping bras are made to hold your breast pump flanges securely to your breast without you holding them yourself. You can hold the flanges to your breasts when you pump, but this means you aren’t able to do anything else during your pump session. Having a hands free pumping bra allows your hands to be free to work, use your phone, etc.

We also do not recommend propping your breast pump flanges into your regular bra. This could cause spilled breast milk if the flange slips during pumping. It also has the potential to lead to clogged milk ducts due to askew positioning. Breast pump flanges need to be in a straightforward position to work efficiently.

Nursing Bra vs. Pumping Bra

If you have a nursing bra (see our top 5 nursing bra picks here), you may be wondering if you really need a pumping bra. The answer is it depends on the type of bra you have.  Some of the bras listed below double as both. The main difference between a nursing bra and a pumping bra is that a pumping bra typically has more compression in order to hold the breast pump flanges securely to your breast. This compression of your breasts is not comfortable when not pumping.

Nursing bras typically come in two designs. The most popular design features clips on the straps above your breast which allow you to pull the fabric of the bra completely down, fully exposing your breast. The other option features a slit in the fabric over your breast. This slit allows you to pull your breast through the fabric. Both designs allow easy access to your breast for your baby.

If you are using the second option with a slit in the fabric, you may be able to insert your breast plump flange into the slit. This will then convert your nursing bra into a hands free pumping bra. You will want to make sure that your nursing bra holds the flange firmly against your breast.  You don’t want the flange to sag if the fabric isn’t strong enough to hold it.

What Size Pumping Bra Do I Need?

Make sure to check the individual sizing guides for each hands free pumping bra listed below. The size your wear may be different from your nursing or regular bras, and may even vary among brands. We can’t stress this enough! The size of your bra will make all the difference for comfort and pumping efficiency. A bra that is too small or too large will not only be uncomfortable, but could lead to low breast milk output when pumping.

Note that some of the best pumping bras are to be worn only during pumping. That means you will have to remove the bra you are wearing to put on a hands free pumping bra.  Once you’re done pumping, you’ll take the hands free pumping bra off again. Some of the pumping bras listed below are 2-in-1 bras that can double as both. We’ve noted the type of bra (pumping only or can be worn all day) below.

Now on to our top five best hands free pumping bras.
